South Cyprus Alleged New Border Rules Cause Confusion

Gürcan Osmanbuba, speaking on behalf of the Employees’ Association in South Cyprus, claimed that from 25 August 2025, only individuals with a Republic of Cyprus or EU ID are allowed to cross the checkpoints. He also stated that those with a birth certificate must present it at each crossing, and individuals whose parents are Republic of Cyprus citizens must carry a copy of the parent’s ID. According to Osmanbuba, TRNC ID holders are not permitted to cross.

However, no official statement has been issued by South Cyprus authorities, and it remains unclear whether the measure is temporary or permanent.

According to unofficial information obtained by Kıbrıs Postası from South Cyprus sources and customs police, there has been no legal change. TRNC ID cards reportedly cannot be read via barcode or chip systems, forcing officials to manually enter the data. To speed up the process, officers may request a Republic of Cyprus ID or a birth certificate.

This technical issue and uncertainty have caused delays at checkpoints and contributed to misinformation.

Osmanbuba emphasized that the association is conducting discussions and will continue to provide updates on the situation.
