Berova: “Destroyed Section Contained Goods Meant for Disposal”
Finance Minister Dr. Özdemir Berova addressed the fire that broke out at the Nicosia Industrial Area Customs and Excise Department Cargo Warehouse, describing the incident as deeply shocking but expressing relief that no lives were lost. The fire, which started around 03:40 a.m., caused significant damage to the warehouse, particularly affecting one-third of the facility.
Berova highlighted that the burned section contained goods stored by the anti-smuggling unit for destruction, while the remaining part housed daily incoming truck shipments. Firefighters arrived within three minutes and brought the blaze under control after approximately two hours. Cooling operations are ongoing, and CCTV footage has been secured for investigation.
Speaking alongside President Ersin Tatar, Berova emphasized that the exact cause of the fire will be determined after a full inquiry. The extent of material losses is being assessed via the warehouse’s automated tracking system, and officials will identify which goods were damaged by the end of the day.
