Feriha Tel: Authorities Trample Constitution Over Land Leases

Feriha Tel, member of the Republican Turkish Party (CTP) and head of the Green Peace Movement, has criticized the Council of Ministers for allegedly leasing forested and rural lands in violation of the law, calling it a “trampling of the constitution.”

Speaking on Kıbrıs Postası TV’s Sabahın Haberleri, Tel claimed that lands leased under the guise of agriculture are being used to build tourist facilities.
Tel emphasized that investments should benefit the country and society, accusing authorities of circumventing transparency and misusing their power. She highlighted that even plots not mentioned in official decisions have been leased, and some constitutionally protected areas are being repurposed for hotels, solar panels, and even cemeteries.
She warned that rural lands, particularly those needed by young people, are being treated as political tools ahead of elections, while the government relies heavily on these areas because few alternatives remain. Tel also questioned the legitimacy of leases in coastal forest areas allegedly designated for agriculture, noting that these sites are being used for prefabricated tourist or summer facilities.
