Üstel: Would AKEL Have Survived Without the Peace Operation?

Prime Minister and National Unity Party (UBP) leader Ünal Üstel marked September 1, World Peace Day, by stressing that the 1974 Peace Operation brought peace and democracy to the island. He questioned whether political organizations such as AKEL and pro-Makarios forces would exist today had the operation not taken place.

Underscoring that multiparty democracy is a cornerstone of democratic life, Üstel said, “To claim otherwise is either to misunderstand democracy or to deny its essence.”

He recalled the Turkish Cypriots’ long struggle for existence, stressing that the 1974 operation provided peace and democratic conditions not only for Turkish Cypriots but also for Greek Cypriots — a fact, he said, the Greek Cypriot side continues to ignore.

Highlighting UBP’s roots in the Turkish Cypriot struggle, Üstel described the party as “a political force standing guard over every aspect of life for the prosperity of our people and the advancement of the TRNC.” He added that leadership transitions within UBP and the government were natural, noting: “No one, including myself, is more valuable than UBP, our people, or the TRNC.”

Üstel concluded his message by extending “love, respect, and solidarity” to all citizens.
