EL-SEN Slams Strike Postponement, Blames KIB-TEK Board for “Sabotage”

The Cyprus Turkish Electricity Authority Workers’ Union (EL-SEN) has strongly criticized the government’s decision to postpone its planned strike at the Teknecik Power Plant for 60 days, accusing the KIB-TEK administration of mismanagement and responsibility for alleged sabotage at the facility.

Speaking during a press conference held in front of the Teknecik Power Plant, EL-SEN President Ahmet Tuğcu said this was the second time within a year that the union’s strike had been delayed by the Council of Ministers, arguing that such postponements had no legal basis.
Tuğcu also addressed ongoing claims of sabotage at the plant, insisting that responsibility lies not with the workers but with the authority’s management.
“Our complaint to the financial police regarding sabotage remains unresolved. Two of our colleagues who provided information were reassigned from their posts,” Tuğcu said. “Who is really to blame? The workers who keep electricity running 24/7, or the KIB-TEK board, which allows 435 megawatts of capacity to shrink to 290 megawatts because necessary parts were not purchased and proper maintenance was neglected?”
Tuğcu went further, directly accusing senior officials of being behind the alleged failures.
“If there is sabotage at KIB-TEK, then the saboteurs are the Board of Directors, the General Manager, and the deputy director responsible for power plant operations,” he declared.
EL-SEN vowed to continue its struggle despite the government’s intervention, stressing that the real issue was the mismanagement of the electricity authority rather than the actions of frontline employees.
