Greek Cypriot EU Commissioner Rauna Urges Turkey to Recognize “Republic of Cyprus”

Greek Cypriot EU Affairs Commissioner Marilena Rauna stated that as an EU candidate country, Turkey is obliged to recognize the Republic of Cyprus, normalize relations, and contribute practically to a comprehensive, sustainable, and fair solution to the Cyprus issue.

According to Haravgi, Rauna, who attended the informal EU General Affairs Council meeting in Copenhagen, suggested that Turkey’s participation would provide an opportunity for the 27 member states to send a clear, unified message.
Rauna emphasized that Turkey has obligations toward all EU member states, including South Cyprus, as part of its candidacy. She noted that these include recognition of the Republic of Cyprus, normalization of bilateral relations, and practical contributions toward resolving the Cyprus conflict.
The informal meeting addressed EU enlargement, the Copenhagen criteria, and the phased integration of candidate countries. Rauna described EU enlargement as a catalyst for geopolitical stability and security, reinforcing Europe’s protection framework.
