Haksever: Despite Cyprus’ Growing Geopolitical Importance, the Issue Remains Low on Global Agenda

Haksever: Despite Cyprus’ Growing Geopolitical Importance, the Issue Remains Low on Global Agenda

Speaking on Kıbrıs Postası TV’s “Sabahın Haberleri” program hosted by Canan Onurer, Haksever noted that the United States, under the leadership of Nikos Hristodulidis in the Greek Cypriot administration, has safeguarded its regional interests, and that resolving the Cyprus issue was not an appealing target for Donald Trump’s populist rhetoric.

Haksever first addressed the U.S. President’s “peacemaker” approach since taking office, linking it to America’s active role in international relations to leverage inter-bloc conflicts and strengthen its regional influence.

He emphasized that despite Cyprus’ rising geopolitical importance, ongoing international conflicts—particularly in Europe and the Middle East—have kept the Cyprus issue from being a top global priority. Haksever recalled that during the Annan Plan period, the more stable international environment allowed the Cyprus matter to gain traction on the world stage.

“Significant regional changes are evident, and Cyprus cannot remain isolated. However, for progress toward a solution, all actors must secure mutual benefits,” Haksever said. He added that unless regional stakeholders achieve reciprocal advantages, a resolution in the near future remains unlikely—a dynamic similar to that during the Annan Plan era.

Discussing U.S. involvement, Haksever noted that Washington has been able to protect its regional interests through strategic relations with the Greek Cypriot side. Regarding Trump specifically, he expressed doubts that resolving the Cyprus issue would significantly contribute to the former president’s populist image, noting that the matter has not reached a level of international prominence that would make it politically advantageous for him.
