Supreme Election Board Clarifies Polling Station Committee Formation

The Supreme Election Board (YSK) stated that, following remarks by Prime Minister Ünal Üstel in the media today, it was necessary to provide clarification regarding the formation of polling station committees.

In a written statement, the YSK reminded that under the Election and Referendum Law No. 5/1976, each polling station is managed by a committee comprising a chairperson and two members appointed by the District Election Boards. These members are selected from well-regarded citizens or public officials.
The Board emphasized that the District Election Boards carefully appoint committee members who have no past political affiliations and, after thorough research, designate the chairpersons and members accordingly.
YSK also noted that all parties and candidates participating in the election are informed of the appointed members and granted the right to object. In addition, each party and independent candidate may nominate one representative to serve on the polling station committee.
YSK Statement Continues:
“Polling station committees have full authority to carry out all procedures before, during, and after voting, and to take necessary measures and decisions. Before beginning their duties on election day, the chairperson and members take an oath on their honor and conscience to perform their duties lawfully, without fear or influence from anyone, and to ensure election results are accurately recorded.
Within this framework, polling station committees carry out their duties impartially. From their appointment until the completion of their duties, they cannot be influenced or interfered with by any political party or candidate, nor act in favor of any party or candidate. If a chairperson or member deliberately obstructs voting or causes votes to be partially or entirely invalid at their polling station in violation of the law, they commit a criminal offense.”
