Ünal Üstel: “Let’s Celebrate Democracy in the Elections”

National Unity Party (UBP) Chairman and Prime Minister Ünal Üstel highlighted his party’s full support for Ersin Tatar in the upcoming presidential election, noting that all party members have embraced the decisions made and are working toward victory at the ballot box.

Speaking on the presidential election, Üstel stated: “In a multiparty parliamentary system, every election is a milestone and a democratic test. From local and general elections to the presidential race, elections are a test not only for the candidates but also for political parties and voters. Since its founding in 1975, the UBP has been present in every election and has consistently ranked among the top parties. This track record has not made us complacent; it has strengthened our sense of responsibility.”
Referring to President Ersin Tatar’s previous candidacy and election as the fifth president five years ago, Üstel said: “During his term, Tatar’s policies on the Cyprus issue have been fully aligned with our motherland, Turkey, and have been shaped in consultation with the UBP. Our unanimous support for his candidacy today reflects the continuation of this policy.”
Üstel also stressed the party’s active outreach: “In our campaign efforts, we aim to hold meetings across every corner of the TRNC. We meet not only with our party members but with all citizens. The warm reception we have received shows that we are achieving this goal. When the UBP makes a decision, it is genuine, and every member—from grassroots to leadership—respects and upholds it. Our commitment to supporting Ersin Tatar will continue until victory at the polls.”
“UBP Is a Party of Struggle, Not Conflict”
On the upcoming elections, Üstel made a broader call: “We fight not through conflict but by adhering to democratic principles, and we expect the same from our opponents. My call is to experience the elections as a celebration of democracy. This appeal is not only as the UBP Chairman and Prime Minister but also as ‘Ünal Abi’ to every citizen, regardless of political view. Let us remember, the day after the election, we will continue to work together under the parliament roof for the existence and prosperity of the TRNC and the welfare of our people. I invite our party members to redouble their efforts for success and embrace all citizens with sincere brotherhood.”
