Liberal Democracy Movement: Youth Effort Cannot Be Turned into Political Leverage

The Liberal Democracy Movement (LDH) sharply criticized Prime Minister Ünal Üstel’s remarks regarding oral exams, saying they undermine the independence of the Public Service Commission (PSC) and reduce the hard-earned achievements of young candidates to political promises.

In its statement, LDH stressed that merit should remain the key criterion for entry into public service, with written and oral examinations designed to safeguard the accomplishments that young people achieve through their efforts.

“PSC Independence Undermined, Youth Effort Exploited for Political Gain”

The party responded to Üstel’s comment, “Pass the written exam and we will provide the necessary support in the oral exam,” calling it an infringement on the PSC’s independence and a political exploitation of youth labor.

LDH emphasized that under liberal democratic principles, state institutions should operate based on law and impartiality, not political or electoral calculations. Institutions like the PSC exist to limit political influence and ensure fair competition. Young people’s futures, the statement added, cannot be reduced to the words of a leader or the protection of an office.

“Partisanship and Nepotism Erode Public Trust”

The movement also pointed to the long-standing culture of partisanship and favoritism, which undermines public trust in state institutions. Promises tied to the PSC, they said, are not only inappropriate but also unjust to young candidates.

LDH called for a transparent, predictable, and merit-based system to secure the future of youth, asserting that the PSC should remain a neutral institution representing the collective conscience of society, not a political tool.

“Every Politicized Exam is a Blow to Youth Aspirations”

Finally, the party reminded that the primary duty of the state is to protect individual freedoms and maintain institutional impartiality. LDH warned that any examination conducted under political influence is a direct blow to the dreams of young people.
