Journalist Canan Onurer Threatened Over Published Story
The Turkish Cypriot Journalists Association (KTGB) has reported that its General Secretary and Kıbrıs Postası Digital Publications Coordinator, Canan Onurer, received a death threat over a published news story. The Association stated, “Journalists cannot be silenced through threats.”
According to KTGB, threats against journalists are on the rise. The organization noted that individuals who came to northern Cyprus on tourist visas from Turkey, committed crimes, and were subsequently deported, have threatened journalists to have news about them removed.
The Association recalled that in February, suspects caught stealing alcohol from markets in Nicosia and Demirhan were arrested, tried, and deported. Following this, these individuals reportedly issued threats against journalists.
Canan Onurer was allegedly told, “If the story is not removed, we will make sure you don’t live,” prompting the matter to be reported to the police.
KTGB emphasized that while this incident may appear isolated, it reflects the ongoing pressures and threats faced by journalists daily. “Under all circumstances, we will continue to defend the public’s fundamental right to access information,” the statement said.
The Association also highlighted potential risks caused by uncontrolled entry and lack of oversight, calling on authorities to act. KTGB affirmed its solidarity with all journalists facing threats and intimidation.
