Disagreement Between Turkey and EU Over Cyprus at UN General Assembly

A dispute emerged between Turkey and the European Union (EU) over Cyprus during discussions on the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) draft resolution at the United Nations General Assembly.

Denmark, representing the EU, objected to references to Cyprus in the text, while the Turkish representative emphasized Turkey’s continued support for the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC). The resolution was ultimately adopted with 118 votes in favor.
According to local media reports, the Danish spokesperson argued that the draft’s references to Cyprus were inconsistent with UN General Assembly, Security Council, and international law, adding that while the text did not constitute UN approval, they could not vote in favor. The Turkish representative responded by asserting that the mindset treating Greek Cypriots as the sole owners of the island must change and reaffirmed Turkey’s commitment to support the TRNC and ensure the Turkish Cypriot voice is heard in all international arenas.
The adoption of the resolution was noted alongside recognition of the TRNC’s observer status in the Baku Declaration.
