Journalists’ Union Condemns Threats Against Journalist Hüseyin Ekmekçi

The Cyprus Turkish Journalists’ Union (KTGB) has condemned threats made against Haber Kıbrıs Editor-in-Chief Hüseyin Ekmekçi, who reported receiving abusive and threatening messages on social media targeting both him and his family. Ekmekçi has filed a complaint with the police regarding the messages, which included statements that he would be “held accountable.”

In its statement, the KTGB emphasized that threats against journalists, particularly those spread through social media platforms in recent times, are direct attacks on press freedom and are unacceptable. The union highlighted that journalists work under pressure and difficult conditions to provide the public with information, stressing its ongoing commitment to stand by those who face injustice.
The statement underscored that protecting and supporting journalists is a cornerstone of democratic societies and called on police to take more sensitive and effective measures to address such incidents. The KTGB concluded with the message: “Our colleagues are not alone; a free press cannot be silenced.”
