Trial Begins Over Alleged Fake Diploma of Jailed Presidential Candidate İmamoğlu

The trial of Ekrem İmamoğlu, jailed presidential candidate and suspended Mayor of Istanbul, has begun at the Silivri Marmara Prison complex. İmamoğlu faces allegations that his undergraduate diploma is fake, a charge that could have major political implications in Turkey’s upcoming presidential election.

The hearing began about an hour late, with proceedings opening with İmamoğlu’s identification and his defense presentation. His legal team is challenging both the alleged diploma cancellation and the Council of Higher Education’s recognition procedures.
Republican People’s Party (CHP) leader Özgür Özel is attending the hearing in person and is expected to visit İmamoğlu after the session. İmamoğlu’s wife Dilek İmamoğlu, their sons, father Hasan İmamoğlu, and sister Neslihan Yakupçebioğlu were also present in the courtroom.
