Denktaş: Support for Erhürman Should Not Be Interpreted Through Cyprus Issue

TAM Party founder Serdar Denktaş said his support for Tufan Erhürman in the upcoming presidential election should not be interpreted in the context of the Cyprus problem.

Denktaş stressed that his backing was unrelated to Erhürman’s stance on the Cyprus question, saying it was wrong to reduce his position to “Denktaş supports federation.”
Calling the Cyprus issue a vital matter with international dimensions that has shaped national will for over 50 years, Denktaş said: “Neither Mr. Erhürman nor anyone else can make a unilateral decision on federation or a two-state solution.”
He underlined that the presidency is a negotiating office, not a final decision-making body, and said the will of the people, Parliament and Turkey are indispensable to the process.
Denktaş argued that equating a candidate’s political line with a particular settlement model was misleading, stressing that any solution would be shaped by the collective will of the people, full consultation with Turkey and the international context.
Warning against dividing society into “pro-federation” and “pro-two-state” camps, Denktaş said the public’s priorities were economic stability, strengthening international respectability and providing a secure future for younger generations.
He concluded by saying that regardless of the model pursued, the Cyprus issue must be approached with a national-interest-oriented and comprehensive perspective, emphasizing that “the path forward lies in unity, solidarity and common sense.”
