Üstel: Turkey’s Support Is the Guarantee of Our Existence

National Unity Party (UBP) leader and Prime Minister Ünal Üstel said that Greece and the Greek Cypriot side seek to weaken the bonds between Turkish Cypriots and Turkey, stressing that “Turkey’s attention and support are the guarantee of our existence.”

Üstel said Turkish Cypriots must approach the future with confidence while remembering their past without losing their sense of unity.
He emphasized that the UBP’s mission is rooted in this understanding and described Turkish Cypriots as loving and sharing people, unlike the Greek Cypriot community, which he said remains self-centered and unwilling to share.
Pointing out that the new school year began today, Üstel said the curriculum promotes love of country, a modern understanding of faith, nationalism free from superiority complexes, and national identity — but not hostility.
He condemned Israel’s ongoing assault on Gaza, saying over 65,000 Palestinians have been killed since October 7, 2023, and recalled late Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat’s words: “I wish we had a motherland like the Turkish Cypriots have in Turkey.”
Üstel stressed that the resistance of the Turkish Cypriot people, backed by Turkey’s decisive military intervention, prevented annihilation during the EOKA and ENOSIS campaigns.
“Those who know this reality, especially Greece and the Greek Cypriot side, are working to weaken and even sever our ties with Turkey,” he said, adding that maintaining strong relations with Turkey is a national goal that must be shared regardless of political differences.
