Kurtulmuş Hosts 168 Mukhtars at Parliament, Reaffirms Two-State Solution for Cyprus

Speaker of the Turkish Grand National Assembly (TBMM) Numan Kurtulmuş hosted 168 mukhtars from North Cyprus in Ankara, stressing that there is no alternative to a two-state solution on the island of Cyprus. He described Northern Cyprus as a “shining star” in the region.

The visit comes on the eve of the presidential election. According to Kıbrıs Postası, the meeting was requested a year ago but scheduled only recently. Some mukhtars reportedly declined to join the delegation because of the timing.
During the “Reception Program for Mukhtars from the TRNC” at Parliament, Kurtulmuş highlighted historic and current ties between Turkey and Northern Cyprus, noting recent investments such as the new Government Compound and Ercan Airport. “The TRNC is now taking firm steps toward becoming a full-fledged Turkish Cypriot state,” he said.
Reiterating Ankara’s position, Kurtulmuş declared, “There is no solution other than a two-state settlement in Cyprus.” He said Turkey will continue strengthening cooperation with Northern Cyprus and supports a peace settlement where Greek Cypriots “exist as residents of the island.”
The mukhtar delegation is also expected to meet with President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Vice President Cevdet Yılmaz, and Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya during their stay in Ankara.
