Fatal Traffic Accident in Cihangir: Edmund Jonathan Cooke Loses His Life
A fatal traffic accident occurred on the İskele–Ercan Highway near Cihangir on the morning of 18 September 2025, leaving one person dead and three others injured.
According to the police, Edmund Jonathan Cooke (64) was driving vehicle NH 396 towards Ercan when he attempted to overtake another car driven by Hasan Altıparmak (57) near Karavezirler Petrol. During the manoeuvre, Cooke’s vehicle collided head-on with an oncoming car driven by İbrahim Gökgedik (58). The impact caused Cooke’s car to spin out of control, strike Altıparmak’s vehicle, and veer off the road into a field.
Cooke was seriously injured and taken to Nicosia Dr. Burhan Nalbantoğlu State Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries despite medical efforts.
Passengers injured in the crash include Anna Steel (71), who was in Cooke’s car, as well as Serdar Hozhyyyev (36) and Shekh Ramjan (38), both passengers in Gökgedik’s vehicle. All three remain under treatment at Nicosia Dr. Burhan Nalbantoğlu State Hospital.
Police confirmed that the investigation into the accident is ongoing.
