Speaking at a press conference at Istanbul Atatürk Airport’s State Guesthouse before departing for the United States, Erdoğan noted that more than 140 heads of state and government are expected to participate in this year’s General Assembly, where all UN member states will be represented.

The General Assembly will convene under the theme “80 Years and Beyond: Together for Better Peace, Development, and Human Rights.” Erdoğan said the UN structure, which reflects the conditions of 80 years ago, has proven insufficient to fulfill its core responsibilities.

“Leaving the resolution of humanitarian crises to the mercy of countries with veto power in the Security Council is unacceptable. Twelve years ago, we declared from the UN rostrum that ‘the world is bigger than five.’ The truth of this statement has been confirmed many times since then. Even the UN Secretary-General has now openly stated the urgent need for reform. We have always supported UN reform efforts and will continue to do so,” Erdoğan said.

He added that he will once again emphasize Turkey’s stance on solving global issues and contributing to peace.

Drawing attention to his address scheduled for Tuesday, September 23, Erdoğan said: “In my speech, I will particularly draw attention to the humanitarian disaster and atrocities in Gaza. I will also address Turkey’s efforts to ensure stability in its region and its contributions to the protection of international peace. The rights and lawful interests of our brothers in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus will once again be on our agenda. I will have the opportunity to present to the world the foreign policy approach that draws inspiration from the double-headed Seljuk Eagle.”

Erdoğan also highlighted that this year’s General Assembly will be significant as many countries are expected to recognize the State of Palestine. “We hope these recognition decisions will accelerate the implementation of a two-state solution,” he said.

He welcomed the presence of representatives of Syria’s new government, which came to power after the December 8 Revolution, ending 14 years of what he described as a “bloody and dark period.” Erdoğan said he hopes this General Assembly will contribute to lasting peace for the Syrian people, who have endured immense suffering.

During his visit, Erdoğan plans to hold meetings with numerous heads of state and government, as well as UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. He will also participate in a regional meeting on Gaza attended by U.S. President Donald Trump and other leaders to discuss joint steps to stop the bloodshed.

Erdoğan will also meet with the Turkish-American community, diaspora groups, and Turkish and American business leaders while in New York.
