Öztürkler: Christodoulides Has Handed Over Control to Netanyahu

President of the TRNC Assembly Ziya Öztürkler criticized Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Christodoulides for transferring full control to Israel, while also addressing public sector reform and the situation of temporary civil servants. Göktürk Ötüken, head of the Turkish Cypriot Civil Servants Union (Memur-Sen), outlined the financial and social rights of public employees.

Öztürkler said that the sovereignty of the Greek Cypriot Administration has become increasingly questionable, adding that Christodoulides has effectively handed over full control to Israel.
“Airports and military bases are now under Israel’s control. We must be extremely vigilant during this period. Netanyahu’s aggressive stance is clear to all of us. In this context, the surrender of sovereignty by an EU member state is also a problem for Brussels,” Öztürkler stated.
Öztürkler also met with the new executive board of Memur-Sen, led by Göktürk Ötüken, emphasizing that unions are fundamental pillars of democratic societies.
He stressed that organized action by public employees in pursuing their rights is vital for establishing social justice.
Highlighting that public sector efficiency is as important as the Assembly’s efficiency, Öztürkler said that public reform must be implemented promptly in cooperation with all stakeholders.
“Reform is essential for the public sector to overcome its challenges,” he added, noting that this would make public administration more institutionalized.
Öztürkler also noted that parliamentary committees continue to work on the status of temporary civil servants and expressed hope that this issue will be resolved in the new legislative year, pledging his support as Assembly President.
Turning to the Cyprus issue, Öztürkler emphasized the importance of the negotiations led by President Ersin Tatar. “We have now reached the level of the people rather than just society. We must escape being trapped in the federation spiral. The oppressive mentality of the Greek Cypriot side is evident,” he said.
He underlined that no territorial concessions should be made and that Turkey’s guarantor role and the presence of the Turkish Armed Forces are indispensable.
“We support the clear stance of our President. This position is critical for maintaining the momentum we have achieved in foreign policy. We advocate a two-state solution model,” Öztürkler concluded.
Memur-Sen President Göktürk Ötüken briefed Öztürkler on the financial and social challenges faced by public employees, highlighting that living conditions for personnel employed under Law No. 47/2010 on the Regulation of Salaries and Other Allowances of Public Employees are increasingly difficult.
Ötüken also called for the legal regulation concerning temporary civil servants to be passed by the Assembly without delay.
The meeting ended with an exchange of gifts between the two sides.
