Malta to Officially Recognize Palestinian State at UN

Malta Prime Minister Robert Abela announced that his country will officially recognize the Palestinian state today at the United Nations General Assembly in New York, joining the group of countries taking this step.

The United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and Portugal recognized the Palestinian state yesterday to promote a two-state solution aimed at ending the war in the Gaza Strip. France and several other countries are also expected to make the same decision today.
Prime Minister Abela first announced Malta’s plans to recognize the Palestinian state last May. The Mediterranean island, an EU member, has a history of supporting the Palestinian cause and efforts to achieve a two-state solution, while also maintaining diplomatic relations with Israel.
The late Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat’s wife lived on the island for several years. Late yesterday, Abela praised Malta’s shipment of flour to the Gaza Strip, describing it as a contribution made on the eve of Malta’s recognition of the Palestinian state.
Calling the recognition of the Palestinian state a “historic” step, Abela stated that Malta will continue its commitment to promoting peace in the region.
