According to reports, the request was made five years after the August 4, 2020 explosion that killed 218 people, recalling that Grecushkin, who allegedly transported the ammonium nitrate that caused the blast to the port, was arrested at Sofia Airport on September 6 under an Interpol-issued arrest warrant.

Fileleftheros noted that, as a citizen of the Republic of Cyprus, Grecushkin could be tried in Southern Cyprus courts. Bulgaria has reportedly requested that the Cypriot authorities determine his legal status.

Southern Cyprus Justice and Public Order Minister Marios Charitsiotis has been informed of the situation and stated that the matter is being consulted with the relevant ministry, police, and Legal Service authorities.

The report added that while Southern Cyprus maintains good relations with Lebanon, there is no formal extradition agreement for suspects; the existing treaty only covers individuals whose crimes have been legally confirmed.
