Addressing the Assembly, Erhürman highlighted the challenging global and regional context and expressed solidarity with the Palestinian people, criticizing the international community and Europe for failing to respond effectively. He warned of “grave developments” on the island, noting that the Greek Cypriot administration allowed Israel to use the Paphos Air Base, reflecting an imbalance against Turkey’s influence.

Erhürman underscored that there are two equal founding communities on the island, and the Turkish Cypriots have equal rights over all values emerging on the island. He recalled that even in 1960, security-related decisions required the Turkish Cypriot veto, emphasizing that the Greek Cypriot leadership cannot make decisions for the entire island without Turkish Cypriot consent.

“The Turkish Cypriot people exist here, and no one can ignore them,” Erhürman said, urging maximum attention to ensure the community’s engagement with the wider world. He stressed the Parliament’s responsibility in safeguarding democracy, freedoms, human rights, and the rule of law, calling for the institution to regain its respect and uphold its own will as an extension of the people’s mandate.

Erhürman also addressed internal security concerns, stressing the need for a serious population policy and action on meritocracy within legislative processes. He reiterated that the Turkish Cypriot community has fought a determined struggle for existence and that it makes its own decisions independently, always consulting with Turkey in foreign relations.

“The Turkish Cypriot people are wise and make their own decisions. This country is democratic, and the people are committed to democracy,” Erhürman said, reaffirming that Turkey remains the guarantor of the island and that Turkish Cypriots are one of the two equal partners.

He concluded by emphasizing the importance of maintaining respect and decorum in Parliament, a principle he has upheld during his 12 years of legislative service.
