Threats Against Journalists Continue Unabated

The Journalists’ Union has condemned new threats against members of the press, this time targeting Devrim Demir, News Editor of Ahbap newspaper.

The union described the situation as “deeply concerning,” stressing that threats against journalists have become persistent and demanding that those responsible face justice.
In a written statement, the union revealed that Demir received threatening messages while carrying out his professional duties. “Our colleague has filed an official complaint with the police. The identities of those making the threats are known. We will not let this matter drop and we expect to see the perpetrators punished,” the statement read.
Emphasizing that journalism is a profession dedicated to protecting the public’s right to information and serving the public interest, the union described the threats as “a direct assault on press freedom.”
The statement also underlined the responsibility of state authorities to act more decisively: “Authorities must be better prepared, more coordinated and more determined in addressing such incidents. Ensuring that journalists can perform their duties freely and without fear is of critical importance.”
Reaffirming its commitment to defend press freedom, freedom of expression and the safety of journalists, the union concluded: “We will continue our legal and professional struggle to uphold the dignity of our profession. No threat, insult or pressure will silence journalists who defend the public’s right to know.”
