Yarkıner: "Faulty Takata Airbag System Caused Death of Young Officer"

Ayer Yarkıner, President of the Chamber of Mechanical Engineers, has claimed that the death of Ali Osman Bayram in a fatal collision on the Değirmenlik–Kyrenia main road was caused by a defect in the Takata airbag system.

Speaking after the 29 September 2025 accident, Yarkıner said the faulty safety mechanism led to the loss of the young officer’s life. He criticized the authorities for failing to act on earlier warnings issued during the Takata crisis.
“Today we face serious shortcomings in the importation of used vehicles. Cars with older manufacturing dates and defective Takata airbags continue to be allowed into the country without adequate control or oversight. This means vehicles with high-risk airbags are still entering our roads,” Yarkıner stated.
He accused the government of indifference, saying the Prime Minister has failed to take responsibility while the Ministry of Transport has adopted a passive stance. To address the issue, Yarkıner called for the establishment of an independent committee under the leadership of the Chamber of Mechanical Engineers.
