Stefanu: “Initiative Needed Urgently to Boost Activity on Cyprus Issue”

AKEL General Secretary Stefanos Stefanu stated that taking initiative to increase momentum on the Cyprus issue is an “urgent need.”

According to Fileleftheros, Stefanu spoke at a commemoration ceremony yesterday, noting that UN Secretary-General António Guterres’ efforts to resume negotiations from where they left off should be supported clearly and willingly.
Stefanu added that the negotiated acquis should be preserved and outstanding issues should be discussed within the framework of the Guterres Initiative.
According to the report, Stefanu emphasized that for AKEL, the “liberation of the homeland” that will be achieved through the resolution of the Cyprus issue is a top priority.
Even though AKEL is currently in opposition, Stefanu said the party continues to contribute to efforts for resolving the Cyprus problem, serving the future of the island through concrete proposals and positions, initiatives taken within Cyprus and internationally, organized events, and a policy of re-engagement with Turkish Cypriots, aiming to safeguard the island’s future.
Stefanu stated that the so-called “65th anniversary of the Republic of Cyprus” on October 1 should serve as a turning point to learn lessons from the past in order to properly direct the struggle for rights.
According to the report, Stefanu noted that one of the most important lessons from this tragic past is that there was inconsistency in supporting the establishment of the “Republic of Cyprus,” and both themselves and the Turkish Cypriot community did not give the Republic the support it required.
