Öztürkler Accuses Christodoulides of Selling Sovereignty to Israel

Speaker of the Parliament Ziya Öztürkler declared that the federation chapter is closed, saying the two-state solution model has strengthened the TRNC’s integration with the Turkic world. He also accused Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Christodoulides of “selling his sovereignty” to Israel.

Serving as Acting President, Öztürkler appeared on Gökhan Altıner’s programme Sabah Postası on Kıbrıs Postası TV, where he discussed the election process and recent regional developments. He said disillusioned voters have begun rallying around President Ersin Tatar, adding that the atmosphere around the National Unity Party (UBP) and the Presidency was improving, with growing participation.
Calling President Tatar’s attendance at the 12th Summit of the Organization of Turkic States (OTS) in Azerbaijan a major diplomatic success, Öztürkler said the event had increased the TRNC’s international visibility. “The most concrete example showing the benefit of the two-state policy in terms of visibility is the OTS,” he said, adding that the TRNC’s integration with the Turkic world has placed it in a stronger diplomatic position.
Öztürkler emphasized that the federation option is no longer viable, noting that Turkey shares this position and that the two-state policy is being jointly pursued. He stated that the contacts established through the OTS exemplify the international recognition this policy brings.
Turning to developments in the south, Öztürkler accused Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Christodoulides of “selling sovereignty to Israel,” arguing that militarization efforts under the guise of defense were endangering the island’s future. He warned that such moves do not serve peace and instead threaten the security of the Turkish Cypriot people.
Referring to the October 1st ceremony held in the south, where commandos chanted militaristic slogans and F-16 fighter jets flew overhead, Öztürkler said these actions heightened regional tensions. Claiming that Turkey is being systematically encircled in the Eastern Mediterranean, he said the Christodoulides administration’s submissive stance is contributing to this process.
Echoing remarks made by Ambassador Ali Murat Başçeri, Öztürkler stressed that all necessary measures—both diplomatic and on the ground—would be decisively employed against such provocations.
Discussing the upcoming presidential election, Öztürkler said the process was proceeding with democratic maturity and that the will of the people would be reflected at the ballot box.
“These elections are not just about choosing a leader,” he said, “but also about determining a strategic direction for the future of the Turkish Cypriot people.” Reiterating his support for President Tatar and the two-state model, Öztürkler recalled that “negotiations based on federation have repeatedly failed due to the intransigent stance of the Greek Cypriot side.”
Öztürkler also announced that the Parliamentary Committee on Legal, Political, Foreign Affairs and Defence had completed the second discussion of the “Resolution Proposal on a Two-State Solution to the Cyprus Problem,” with the third to be held in the next meeting.
Commenting on international developments, Öztürkler said the Hamas leadership’s positive response to US President Donald Trump’s Gaza proposal should be closely monitored. He underlined the importance of supporting peace efforts in the region and highlighted the need for humanitarian diplomacy to take precedence.
