Canaltay: TDT’s Support for the TRNC Is a Historic Step

Deputy Chair of the TRNC–Azerbaijan Interparliamentary Friendship Group, Resmiye Canaltay, who attended the Turkic States Organization (TSO) Summit in Gabala, said that the expression of solidarity for the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) in the Gabala Declaration was a historic step toward the TRNC gaining the place it deserves in the international arena.

According to a statement from the Parliament, Canaltay evaluated the TSO Gabala Summit Declaration.
Describing the declaration, issued under the theme “Regional Peace and Security,” as a turning point in international support for the just cause of the Turkish Cypriot people, Canaltay said the inclusion of solidarity for the TRNC in the document represented a historic development for the TRNC’s rightful recognition in the international sphere.
“The TSO’s Stance Is a Clear Expression of Support for the TRNC’s Vision of Cooperation Between Two Sovereign and Equally Recognized States”
Canaltay continued: “The call in the declaration for a realistic, negotiated, and mutually acceptable settlement on the island clearly demonstrates that the TRNC reality must be taken into account in any solution process. Moreover, the solidarity expressed with the inherent rights of the Turkish Cypriot people is a strong affirmation of our sovereign equality, right to self-determination, and our will to establish and maintain our own administration, security, and identity.
These approaches reaffirm — at the level of the Turkic world — the two-state solution reality that much of the UN and international community continue to overlook. The position of the Turkic States Organization constitutes an explicit endorsement of the TRNC’s vision of cooperation between two states based on sovereign equality and equal international status.
As the TRNC, we warmly welcome this determined solidarity from the Turkic world and once again reaffirm our commitment to building a shared future on the island based on justice, peace, and stability, in a spirit of good neighbourly relations between the two states.”
