İmamoğlu: Respecting the Will of the TRNC Is Not Just Diplomacy, It’s a Duty of Brotherhood

Istanbul Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu emphasized the importance of respecting the will of the Turkish Cypriot people ahead of the 19 October presidential election in the TRNC.

Speaking ahead of the vote, İmamoğlu stated: “Respecting the will of the people of the TRNC is not merely a diplomatic requirement; it is a duty of brotherhood.”
Highlighting his personal connection to the island, İmamoğlu recalled his university years in Northern Cyprus and his close observation of the Turkish Cypriot community’s struggle for democracy, freedom, and existence.
He said, “The Turkish Cypriots have the power to determine their own destiny. From the very beginning, we recognized the sovereignty of the TRNC. Respecting the will of its people is not just a matter of diplomacy; it is a duty of brotherhood.”
İmamoğlu also underscored the importance of a peaceful and democratic election process during this critical period of renewed peace talks on the island.
He added, “We will continue to support the Turkish Cypriot community in its search for solutions based on peace, equality, and mutual respect.”
