Taçoy Criticizes Erhürman: “Those Who Promise Seriousness Must Be Serious Themselves”

UBP MP Hasan Taçoy criticized CTP leader and presidential candidate Tufan Erhürman for what he described as “frivolous statements,” asserting that “Seriousness cannot be advertised on billboards with slogans. You must be serious yourself first.” Taçoy argued that pre-election populist promises are misleading for the public.

With just a week to go until the 19 October election, Taçoy emphasized the significance of the vote: “One week from today, we will be at the ballot box, showing the world the strength of our democracy,” he said.
Taçoy also addressed Erhürman’s proposed “Three Tables” plan, which includes negotiations with Greek Cypriot leader Hristodulidis on a federal solution, ongoing technical committees, and a domestic policy table. He dismissed the first as “worn-out and broken,” the second as merely a continuation of previous work, and the third as a populist initiative “detached from reality and seriousness.”
“Seriousness cannot be advertised on billboards with slogans,” Taçoy said. “You must demonstrate it on Cyprus issues, in relations with Turkey, regarding TDT membership, and in national governance.”
He concluded by urging Erhürman to avoid unrealistic promises, adding: “You cannot speak of seriousness while making unserious promises. Those who promise seriousness must first be serious themselves.”
