Aykut, who also holds Portuguese and Turkish citizenship, pleaded guilty this morning to 40 charges, including “forgery involving property belonging to others,” while the court dismissed 202 other charges. In total, Aykut had faced 242 charges in a case valued at €43 million.

The offences fall under the Cyprus Criminal Code and carry a maximum prison sentence of seven years. The court stated that Aykut’s detention since June 2024 would be taken into account when determining the final sentence. The case is seen as a legal precedent, marking the first major decision by courts in the south concerning Greek Cypriot-owned properties located in the north.

According to Fileleftheros, the case took an unexpected turn this morning when Aykut’s lawyer, Maria Neophytou, announced during the hearing that the case would no longer continue, as an agreement had been reached between the defence and the prosecution, leading to the withdrawal of certain charges.

The court granted both sides a 20-minute recess to finalise the settlement. When the hearing resumed, Senior Counsel Andreas Aristides, representing the Republic, presented the charges to which Aykut had pleaded guilty. Neophytou then made a plea for leniency in sentencing.

The presiding judge, Christiana Parpotta, stated that the final ruling would be delivered on October 24.
