Ertuğruloğlu: President’s Role as Negotiator Was Not Granted by Parliament

Foreign Minister Tahsin Ertuğruloğlu responded to Yeniden Doğuş Partisi (YDP) leader and Minister of Public Works and Transport Erhan Arıklı’s remark that “if Erhürman wins, we will not allow federation talks and will withdraw the authority of the negotiator,” saying the president’s role as negotiator “was not assigned by parliament, but shaped by the circumstances created by the United Nations.”

Speaking on Kıbrıs Postası TV, Ertuğruloğlu clarified, “The president did not become a negotiator through a mandate from parliament. This emerged due to the environment created by the UN. The late Mr. Denktaş once went to parliament himself to request a decision to strengthen his hand before going into talks. That led to the misconception that the president’s role as negotiator is granted by parliament.”
Commenting on Arıklı’s suggestion that the Foreign Ministry should assume the negotiator’s role, Ertuğruloğlu said, “I do not believe there will be any meaningful negotiation process on the essence of the Cyprus issue. Therefore, the idea that the foreign minister would serve as negotiator is not relevant to my position.”
