Erhürman: “No Negotiation Table in Five Years, I Seek State Seriousness”

Presidential candidate and CTP leader Tufan Erhürman criticized the current administration’s handling of negotiations during an interview with Günaydın Haber Kıbrıs host Hüseyin Ekmekçi.

Erhürman stated that no negotiation table has been convened in the past five years, highlighting a historic first in which a president has completed a full term without engaging in formal talks. “Not even a single meeting table has been set up in Nicosia,” he said.
Addressing President Ersin Tatar’s “two-state solution” rhetoric, Erhürman questioned what Tatar intends to do regarding shared authority areas, including hydrocarbons, energy, citizenship, and security. “Turkey naturally supports the two-state stance. In my model, there is the Turkish Cypriot state and the Greek Cypriot state. If there is anything beyond that two-state concept, Ersin Bey should clarify,” he added.
On the issue of EU citizenship, Erhürman affirmed his commitment to securing the rights of children from mixed marriages: “I will ensure that children from mixed marriages obtain their EU citizenship rights. This is my clear and firm promise.”
Responding to suggestions that he had met with Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Hristodulidis, Erhürman denied any formal discussions, noting only brief handshakes at receptions. “I respect the state’s protocol. As the leader of the main opposition, I will not preempt the designated negotiator. I am seeking state seriousness,” he concluded.
