Turkey Says 'Ensures' Safety of Its Citizens Amid Tensions in Montenegro
Montenegro has decided to temporarily halt visa-free travel for Turkish citizens following a violent incident in Podgorica involving a Turkish group, Prime Minister Milojko Spajic announced.
In a statement on his X account, Spajic said the government would implement the suspension through an urgent procedure.
"To preserve economic activity and good bilateral relations, we will initiate intensive talks with the Republic of Turkey in the coming period to find, in the spirit of good cooperation and alliance, the most suitable model that serves the interests of both sides," he added.
The move follows a stabbing and brawl in Podgorica's Zabjelo district over the weekend, where a 25-year-old local man was seriously injured after allegedly being attacked by Turkish citizens at a bar terrace.
Police detained 45 Turkish citizens, including two directly linked to the assault.
Authorities are reviewing the legality of their stay and any elements of violence involved.
The incident sparked tensions, with local residents gathering in protest and chanting anti-Turkish slogans.
Turkey's Foreign Ministry responded with a statement, noting that unfortunate developments over the weekend had affected Turkish citizens.
"Immediately after the events began, contact was established with Montenegrin authorities, and necessary measures were ensured for the safety of our citizens," the ministry said.
It added that all developments are being closely monitored, with ongoing coordination and contact with Montenegrin officials.
Montenegro currently allows Turkish citizens visa-free stays of up to 90 days within a 180-day period, making it a popular destination for Turkish tourists.
