Talat said on social media that ignoring the EU’s appointed Cyprus Special Representative would lead to situations where Greek Cypriot parliamentarians could push unilateral measures, such as the EP’s monument decision, using their influence in Brussels.

As both former Prime Minister and President who initiated the process of locating missing persons and returning remains to families, Talat expressed deep disappointment over the EP decision. He warned that failing to maintain diplomatic channels allows the Greek Cypriot side to exploit its status as both a recognized state and an EU member. “Protesting after the fact is easy; achieving results beforehand is the real challenge,” he said.

Talat stressed that the proper approach is to obtain direct information from Brussels to prevent unilateral decisions. He also noted that coordinated lobbying could have helped avert the EP’s unilateral move, reminding that “Brussels is a city of lobbies, and so is the European Parliament.”

Concluding his remarks, Talat highlighted the importance of defending Turkish Cypriot interests: “We must do everything possible to ensure Turkish Cypriot voices are heard there and protect our people’s interests. Waiting until after the fact to protest is easy; we must accomplish the difficult task.”
