Ünal Üstel Condemns EU Parliament Decision: “Missing Persons Must Not Be Politicized”
TRNC Prime Minister Ünal Üstel criticized the European Parliament’s recent decision to fund a monument exclusively for Greek Cypriot missing persons, calling it a one-sided approach that ignores the suffering of Turkish Cypriots. He emphasized that the issue of missing persons is humanitarian and above politics.
In a statement, Üstel said the amendment to the EU 2026 budget, allocating funds solely for a monument for Greek Cypriot missing persons, is biased and wrong. He stressed that the tragedy of missing persons affects both communities, noting that Turkish Cypriots have also endured hundreds of losses.
Üstel argued that the European Parliament’s decision overlooks the existence and pain of Turkish Cypriot missing persons and undermines the neutrality of the Committee on Missing Persons (CMP), which has been working constructively for decades.
“The issue of missing persons must be treated with human dignity and impartiality, not exploited for political gain. This unilateral decision is another example of the EU’s ongoing injustices toward the Turkish Cypriot community,” Üstel said.
He reiterated the TRNC government’s call for the European Union to reverse this flawed and partial decision, emphasizing that the Turkish Cypriot community will never remain silent in the face of political manipulation of human suffering.
