Christodoulides Meets UN Envoy Diagne: “We Are Ready to Resume Negotiations”
The newly appointed UN Special Representative and Head of the UN Peacekeeping Mission in Cyprus, Khassim Diagne, held his first official meeting on the island with Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Christodoulides.
During the meeting at the Presidential Palace, Christodoulides expressed his readiness to resume peace talks from where they left off in Crans-Montana in 2017, saying his administration has the political will to overcome the challenges and create suitable conditions for renewed negotiations.
According to riknews.com, Christodoulides also conveyed his willingness — along with his team handling the Cyprus issue — to work closely with the UN envoy.
For his part, Diagne reaffirmed Secretary-General Antonio Guterres’s commitment to the Cyprus peace process. He said the UN would make every effort within its capacity to create the necessary conditions for a meaningful dialogue between Christodoulides and President Tufan Erhürman.
Also present at the meeting were Deputy Minister for European Affairs Marinela Rauna, Greek Cypriot Negotiator Menelaos Menelau, Government Spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis, Head of the Diplomatic Office Doros Venezis, and Director of the Press Office Viktoras Papadopoulos.
Following the meeting, Letymbiotis told reporters that Christodoulides had raised several issues with Diagne, including the detention of five Greek Cypriots in the north, the situation in Varosha, developments along the Green Line, and other matters of concern.
