Christodoulides: “Greek Cypriot Side Is Not Afraid of Negotiations and Ready to Talk”
Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Christodoulides has stated that his side is neither afraid of resuming talks on Cyprus nor unprepared for negotiations.
Speaking after the official student parade marking the “Ohi” Day celebrations on October 28, Christodoulides commented on remarks made by TRNC President Tufan Erhürman, emphasizing that all parties will be considered at the negotiation table.
Christodoulides noted that he had not been able to establish direct communication with Erhürman until recently. He said he reads Erhürman’s statements regularly and, having been involved in the Cyprus issue for many years, is well aware of the developments. He stressed that the Greek Cypriot side wants an end to the so-called “occupation,” national liberation, and reunification of the island, and that they know their goals and how to achieve them.
The Greek Cypriot president confirmed that his side is ready to negotiate under the framework of the UN and the principles and values of the EU. Regarding communication with Erhürman, Christodoulides explained that the Greek Cypriot side has tried to reach out since Erhürman’s election but has not yet succeeded. He added that during a European Council meeting in Brussels last week, he attempted to reconnect but received no response.
Commenting on the symbolic significance of October 28, marking Greece’s refusal to surrender to Italy during World War II, Christodoulides said the message resonates with their ongoing struggle for justice, liberation, and reunification of Cyprus. He emphasized that all domestic and international resources would be mobilized until this goal is achieved. He also acknowledged the role of thousands of Greek Cypriots who historically supported Greece and humanity in the fight against Nazism and fascism, noting that the lessons from these struggles remain crucial.
Meanwhile, reports highlighted that contacts on the Cyprus issue have increased following Erhürman’s election. UN Secretary-General António Guterres’ Special Envoy and Head of the UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus, Khassim Diagne, held his first meeting with Christodoulides today. The arrival of UN Personal Envoy Maria Ángela Holguín to Cyprus is expected next week to facilitate further discussions between the leaders, ahead of a planned informal expanded international meeting on Cyprus in November-December.
Greek Cypriot media outlets, including Fileleftheros and Alithia, underscored Christodoulides’ message that “we will all be considered at the negotiation table” and noted that initial attempts to establish direct contact with Erhürman have not yet succeeded.
