Merz: “We Want to See Turkey in the EU”
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan held a joint press conference in Ankara with German Chancellor Friederich Merz during Merz’s official visit to Turkey at Erdoğan’s invitation. On the issue of EU membership, Erdoğan stated, “If Turkey sees the recognition it deserves from the Union, we can make significant progress in a very short time.” Merz added, “We want to see Turkey in the EU.”
Chancellor Merz began his visit with a tour of Anıtkabir before meeting Erdoğan. The two leaders later held a joint press conference.
Turkish Community in Germany and Racism
Erdoğan highlighted the contributions of the Turkish community in Germany:
“Our brothers and sisters who went to Germany with their suitcases 64 years ago have grown to a population of 3.5 million and greatly contributed to Germany’s development. We reaffirmed today that the Turkish community is a shared asset, and we emphasized the importance of protecting their achievements.”
He also underlined the commitment to combating xenophobia and racism.
Defense Cooperation and Eurofighter Update
Regarding defense cooperation, Erdoğan noted:
“Germany is Turkey’s largest trade partner in Europe. We discussed overcoming past difficulties in the procurement of defense industry products. We welcome Germany’s positive steps, such as the Eurofighter procurement process.”
Merz commented, “Eurofighter jets are important for our shared security.”
EU Full Membership
On the topic of EU accession, Erdoğan said:
“If Turkey’s determined efforts receive the recognition they deserve from the Union, we can achieve significant progress very quickly.”
He also stressed the importance of Syria’s territorial integrity and the implementation of the March 10 agreement.
Merz: Special Relations Unite Us
Ahead of his Ankara meetings, Merz posted on X:
“Turkey and Germany share a special and multifaceted relationship, covering not only foreign and security policy but also migration, energy, and trade. I am in Ankara to further strengthen this close partnership.”
Erdoğan on Copenhagen and Ankara Criteria
Responding to a question on the Copenhagen criteria, Erdoğan said:
“This is not a negative process for us. If these criteria are applied to us, we also have Ankara criteria. Through these, we open ourselves to the world and Europe. Turkey is not an ordinary country; it is a functioning democracy both in Europe and Asia.”
Other Domestic Issues
On questions regarding Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality investigations, Erdoğan emphasized the rule of law, saying judicial authorities must act regardless of the office held.
Regarding referees and betting investigations, Erdoğan stated:
“Now the incident with referees in football has emerged. A state cannot remain passive while these events unfold on football fields; necessary actions must be taken, and they have been. Citizens are pleased to see these developments being addressed.”
