Üstel Once Again Rules Out Early Elections
National Unity Party (UBP) Leader and Prime Minister Ünal Üstel has once again ruled out the possibility of an early general election following the presidential election results, saying the party will complete the process in a healthy and stable manner. “Early elections are not on our agenda. The UBP fears neither congresses nor elections — it emerges stronger from both,” Üstel said.
In a written statement, Üstel noted that he has been holding one-on-one meetings within the party since the election to evaluate the results thoroughly. “From the morning after the election, I have spent much of my time meeting face to face with members of the Central Executive Board, Party Assembly, and parliamentary group. I want everyone, including myself, to be open to criticism, and we are recording all of them,” he said.
Üstel emphasised that both the government and the country are facing difficult times, with inflation, currency fluctuations, and supply chain disruptions that are not of the TRNC’s making. “We cannot allow a management crisis to arise. The UBP is the largest mass party in our country, and we will shape the future through dialogue and discussion,” he stated.
He reiterated that early elections are not on the agenda: “At this stage, we do not consider an early election to be beneficial for our country. The parliamentary elections scheduled for January 2027 will proceed as planned, and the most reasonable timeline will be set soon. We want to use this time wisely to complete ongoing projects.”
Üstel also said that the Güzelyurt and Kyrenia State Hospitals would soon be completed and put into service. He noted that the financial situation was improving, with the government on track to close the year with a smaller budget deficit than anticipated.
Signalling willingness to cooperate with opposition parties, Üstel said: “We will also meet with the opposition. We respect that they are currently in a congress process. We will reiterate our proposal to the Republican Turkish Party for cooperation on reform legislation.”
Üstel concluded with a message to the UBP grassroots: “We will carry our party and our country into the future in the healthiest way possible, without descending into chaos. A party whose members are this devoted fears neither a congress nor an election. It will emerge stronger from both — as long as we plan correctly, learn from this process, and take the right measures.”
