Üstel: “Scheduled Election Is January 2027, But Can Be Held in 2026 If Necessary”
The Republic Assembly General Assembly convened today to discuss the legislative agenda. During the session, Prime Minister Ünal Üstel outlined the government’s achievements, commented on the economy, and responded to calls for an early election.
Üstel emphasized that many projects left incomplete by previous administrations were finalized during his government, citing the Ercan Airport and Lefkoşa Ring Road Yonca Junction projects as examples.
He said: “The Ercan Airport tender was issued in 2012 and remained unfinished when we took office in 2022. We pushed and completed it. Passenger numbers increased by 50%.”
He also announced that water supplied from Turkey under the Asrın Water Project has been distributed nationwide and will soon reach the Mesarya region.
“Steps Taken to Protect Citizens Against Inflation”
Addressing economic developments, Üstel stated that his government has ensured citizens were not burdened by inflation.
“We increased cost-of-living adjustments in 2023, 2024, and 2025 and provided necessary support to minimum wage earners,” he said, adding that recent fuel price hikes are linked to global oil market trends.
He also noted that incentives to support producers continue under the financial cooperation protocol with Turkey.
“We Did Not Shrink the Economy, We Grew It”
Responding to criticism of government economic policies, Üstel said: “We did not shrink the economy; we grew it, even if modestly.”
He highlighted that the number of registered employees increased from 85,000 at the start of his term to 150,000, and reminded that the Hal Law recently passed parliament and its tender will be launched soon.
“We Do Not Shy Away from Early Elections”
Regarding calls from CTP MPs for early elections, Üstel stressed that the UBP does not avoid elections:
“The scheduled election date is January 2027. However, if conditions require, it can also be held in 2026. This decision would be made jointly by UBP, YDP, and DP,” he stated.
Üstel concluded by affirming that the government will continue its work with determination.
