“Operation Siper” Sees 11 Guns and 9 Bullets Seized, 2 Suspects Arrested
As part of the “Operation Siper” conducted by the Special Investigation Branch of the Police General Directorate, authorities seized 11 nine-millimeter pistols, 11 magazines, and 9 live rounds. Two suspects, Hasan Akçın and Yılmaz Sarmış, were taken into custody in connection with the case.
Hasan Akçın appeared in court in Kyrenia and was remanded for three days, while Yılmaz Sarmış was brought before a duty court in Nicosia, which granted a two-day remand.
Police officer Umut Beyazlar told the court that a preliminary digital examination of Akçın’s phone revealed messages with Sarmış regarding the storage of the firearms after being imported into the TRNC.
Following this, a search on November 1, 2025, of Akçın’s MJ19EXK-registered Ford Transit in Güzelyurt uncovered the weapons and ammunition. Police said the investigation is ongoing to determine whether the suspects possess additional firearms.
