Rahvancıoğlu: Minimum Wage Earners Lost 31,241 TL in Ten Months

Münür Rahvancıoğlu, Financial Secretary of the Independence Path Party, said that with the release of October’s cost of living figures, minimum wage earners in Northern Cyprus had lost a total of 31,241 TL in real terms over the first ten months of the year, effectively earning “9.28 months’ worth of wages in ten months.”

Rahvancıoğlu: Minimum Wage Earners Lost 31,241 TL in Ten Months

He called for the abolition of the Minimum Wage Determination Commission and for the minimum wage to be equalized with the lowest public-sector salary, with adjustments every two months based on the cost of living index.

Rahvancıoğlu stated that as of today, the real value of the minimum wage had eroded by 5,210 TL per month compared to its January 1, 2025 level, meaning that private-sector workers are now being paid below the rate set at the beginning of the year. He added that by the end of 2025, the total loss would likely exceed one full month’s salary, continuing what he described as a long-standing “11-month wage policy” maintained by successive governments since 2011.

Emphasizing that private-sector employees deserve a 13th salary just like public servants, Rahvancıoğlu said, “Unfortunately, in reality, even twelve full salaries are not being paid.”

He argued that the solution is simple: “The outdated Minimum Wage Determination Commission must be abolished, and the minimum wage should be equal to the lowest public salary, increased every two months according to the cost of living rate.” However, he claimed that “none of the regime parties, including the opposition, will implement this step,” because, he said, “business owners fund their election campaigns, billboards, and banquets with money taken from the workers.”

Rahvancıoğlu concluded, “Only a party that does not take money from capitalists and stands firmly with the workers can implement this simple measure. And such a party exists.”
