The verdict was delivered today at the Nicosia Assize Court, where both defendants appeared for sentencing. Presiding Judge Füsun Cemaller emphasized the importance of deterrent penalties in crimes that disturb public order, stating that “the judiciary cannot afford to take such crimes lightly,” and noting that “our country has been deeply wounded by these offences.”

Judge Cemaller, accompanied by Senior Judge Vedia B. Barkın and Judge Gülay Süleymanoğlu Uğur, highlighted that Gündüz committed fraud repeatedly over a two-year period, describing his actions as deliberate and premeditated. She stated that Gündüz had issued fake university licenses, misused university funds, and forged official documents, including falsified university diplomas that were later circulated.

Regarding Amir Shakerifard, Cemaller said he was responsible for falsifying course records to issue a fake dentistry diploma, warning that such an act could pose serious risks to public health.

Cemaller underlined that crimes of this nature have tarnished the reputation of all universities in the country and stressed the need for effective sentencing to protect the public interest.

Both defendants were credited for admitting their crimes, but the court concluded that long-term imprisonment was the most appropriate punishment. Gündüz received concurrent sentences of 15 and 6 years, while Shakerifard was sentenced to 6 years, to be served concurrently.
