Political Parties Call on UN to Disclose Agreed Points from Cyprus Negotiations
At a bicommunal meeting organized under the auspices of the Slovak Embassy, political party leaders and representatives from both North and South Cyprus called on the United Nations to publicly disclose the points agreed upon during past negotiations. The meeting also addressed new confidence-building measures and potential steps toward a comprehensive settlement.
The regular monthly gathering of Turkish Cypriot and Greek Cypriot political party leaders and representatives, hosted by the Slovak Embassy in South Cyprus, took place today at the Ledra Palace Hotel in the buffer zone in Nicosia.
During the meeting, participants discussed a proposal put forward by the United Democrats in South Cyprus under the theme “Hope Blossoms for Cyprus! Let us not miss this new opportunity to find an agreed solution to the Cyprus problem, which has been left unresolved for three generations. Let us seize this chance for a brighter future for ourselves and the generations to come.” It was noted that special reference was made to newly elected TRNC President Tufan Erhürman.
Participants also exchanged views on how new confidence-building measures and the resumption of substantive negotiations could facilitate progress toward a comprehensive settlement.
According to a joint statement released by the Slovak Embassy, the attending party representatives called on the Turkish Cypriot and Greek Cypriot leaders to authorize the United Nations to make public the issues agreed upon during past negotiation rounds documented by the UN.
Such transparency, they said, would help reveal how far the island remains from achieving a comprehensive solution and a shared future within Europe.
The participants further emphasized that the ongoing failure to resolve the Cyprus problem has caused significant economic and social losses and that political will and responsibility are essential to move forward toward a solution.
The next bicommunal meeting will be hosted by VOLT Cyprus on December 3.
Parties represented at the meeting included, from the north: the Republican Turkish Party (CTP), New Cyprus Party (YKP), Communal Democracy Party (TDP), Cyprus Socialist Party (KSP), United Cyprus Party (BKP), and the Democrat Party (DP); and from the south: the Progressive Party of Working People (AKEL), Cyprus Green Party, Movement for Social Democrats (EDEK), United Democrats (EDI), Republican United Cyprus Party (ERKK), Democratic Alignment (DEPA), and VOLT Cyprus.
