UN Envoy Holguin to Visit Cyprus in December
UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy on Cyprus, Maria Angela Holguin, is expected to visit the island between December 4 and 12 for a new round of contacts. Holguin is scheduled to meet President Tufan Erhürman on December 5 and Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Christodoulides on December 6.
According to Fileleftheros, Holguin’s meetings with the two leaders will take place on consecutive days as part of efforts to revive dialogue on the Cyprus issue.
Citing the Greek Cypriot Presidency’s statement, Haravgi reported that the administration had agreed to the rescheduled visit and was awaiting an official announcement from the UN. Government Spokesperson Konstantinos Letymbiotis said the administration expects the UN to respect international protocol in coordinating official contacts.
Letymbiotis added that the Greek Cypriot side had promptly accepted the new dates proposed by the UN, noting that they now await a formal confirmation of the envoy’s itinerary.
Commenting on the complaint filed with the Greek Cypriot police against former Turkish Cypriot trade unionist Şener Elcil over alleged “usurpation of Greek Cypriot properties” in the TRNC, Letymbiotis said the matter has been referred to the judiciary and that the government would not make any statement while proceedings are ongoing.
He further described what he called the “usurpation of Greek Cypriot properties in the TRNC” as a serious issue and a continuing human rights violation stemming from what he termed the “51-year-long Turkish occupation.” He also claimed that Turkey was using this matter as a tool parallel to what he called “colonization efforts.”
