PM Üstel: Attacks on Our Flag Will Not Weaken the Turkish Cypriot Stance
On the 42nd anniversary of the TRNC, Prime Minister Ünal Üstel condemned on social media an incident in which the TRNC flag was targeted in Southern Cyprus.
He stated, “Everyone should know that no attack on our flag, our state, or our sovereign rights can ever weaken the dignified stance of the Turkish Cypriot people or their determination to protect their state.”
While the TRNC celebrated its anniversary peacefully on November 15, Üstel noted that it was impossible to ignore the aggressive behavior of Greek Cypriot youth carrying Greek flags at border gates, targeting both the border and the Turkish Cypriot people.
Emphasizing that any viable solution on Cyprus must be based on the existence of two states, Üstel said, “Even if we do not reach a mutual agreement, we will exist and coexist as two neighboring states with good relations on the island. We sincerely believe in this.”
He added, “The actions of Greek Cypriot youth, who carry Greek flags to our borders and burn the TRNC flag, are an insult and attack on the Turkish Cypriot people. A flag is a symbol of a state, of the people who give it life, and of their honor. Those who burn or order the burning of the TRNC flag should know this—or learn it if they do not.”
