Ertuğruloğlu: Those Hiding Behind ‘Preconditions’ Cannot Impose New Preconditions on the Turkish Side
Foreign Minister Tahsin Ertuğruloğlu stressed that the main reason for decades of failed negotiations is the Greek Cypriot side’s insistence on the “Republic of Cyprus” as a precondition, and that no new preconditions can be imposed on the Turkish side.
Speaking to the Turkish Cypriot News Agency (TAK), Ertuğruloğlu criticized Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Christodoulides’ statement that “negotiations should start without preconditions,” saying, “There is only one precondition in the Cyprus issue, and that is the recognition of the Greek Cypriot side as the ‘Republic of Cyprus.’”
Responding to Christodoulides’ call for negotiations to resume “unconditionally with the new Turkish Cypriot leadership from the point reached in summer 2017,” Ertuğruloğlu stated:
