Christodoulides: We Await Erhürman’s Response for Negotiations to Resume Asap
According to reports in the Greek Cypriot press, Turkish Cypriot Leader Tufan Erhürman and Greek Cypriot Leader Nikos Christodoulides are set to meet tomorrow to continue negotiations from where they left off in Crans Montana, aiming for tangible results. Both leaders are expected to focus on concrete steps forward during the talks.
Politis newspaper, in its report titled “Procedural Issues First, Then the Substance,” highlighted Christodoulides’ statements from yesterday regarding the upcoming meeting.
Christodoulides Hopes for Tangible Progress from Talks Resuming from Crans Montana
Christodoulides stated yesterday afternoon that he expects the meeting with Erhürman to produce tangible positive outcomes that would allow negotiations to resume from where they stopped in Crans Montana. While this will be their first direct discussion, he emphasized that the meeting will not be merely a social encounter but a step toward substantial progress.
He added, “This is the sole objective, and I attend the meeting hoping it will immediately trigger reciprocal efforts.”
Awaiting a Response from the Other Side
Christodoulides reiterated that they are fully prepared and hope to receive a response from the other side so that negotiations can begin as soon as possible. He also emphasized that this aligns with the framework set by the UN Secretary-General during both trilateral and expanded-level discussions, and he expects the meeting to constitute a substantial step toward progress.
Based on the information Politis obtained, Erhürman is determined to outline the fundamental issues of the Cyprus process during tomorrow’s meeting. According to sources cited by the newspaper from the Turkish Cypriot community, Erhürman is ready to move to substantive discussions once the key issues, also highlighted during his recent meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, are clarified.
The report further suggests that Erhürman will try to reach a common understanding with Christodoulides on the points he has publicly raised. This includes setting a timeline for discussions on the core issues and clarifying the next steps for the Turkish Cypriot side if dialogue fails due to actions by the Greek Cypriot side.
