Erhürman: Any Agreement Signed Without the Consent of Turkish Cypriots Is Unacceptable
President Tufan Erhürman responded to recent debates in the Greek Cypriot press, emphasizing that the Lebanon-Greek Cyprus agreement was signed without the consent of Turkish Cypriots and dismissing claims that his true intent is not a solution.
In a statement on social media, Erhürman criticized the agreement between Lebanon and the Greek Cypriot Administration, noting that it was concluded without the involvement of “one of the two equal founders and sovereign partners of the island, the Turkish Cypriots.”
Addressing further criticism, Erhürman highlighted his international engagements, explaining that he has communicated Turkish Cypriot perspectives in forums such as the European Union, the Organization of Turkic States, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, and the Economic Cooperation Organization. He rejected allegations in some Greek Cypriot media suggesting that his real intention is not to pursue a solution.
Erhürman stressed that the Greek Cypriot side’s continued signing of agreements for the entire island without Turkish Cypriot consent, while expecting the Turkish Cypriot side to remain passive, is neither fair nor conducive to a resolution. He described this as a “status quo” approach, implying that Greek Cypriots act as sole owners of the island while Turkish Cypriots are expected to wait silently—a stance he finds unacceptable.
He outlined the “new approach” in four points:
-
Turkish Cypriots desire a solution;
-
Until a solution is reached, they will not accept being ignored or unilateral actions by the Greek Cypriot side that bind the island’s future;
-
Turkish Cypriots emphasize that unilateral initiatives by the Greek Cypriot side do not contribute to peace, stability, or a solution;
-
Turkish Cypriots will continue proposing measures to ease daily life and open pathways to a solution, while also pursuing international engagement using all available channels.
Erhürman concluded by affirming that these positions will be communicated patiently, calmly, and resolutely on every platform.
